This course corresponds to chapters 2.1.5 The interventional radiology team and 2.1.6 Interventional radiology clinical practice in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology.
Abstract
Interventional radiology has become an essential part of modern medicine providing minimally invasive treatment solutions for a broad range of medical conditions. There is hardly any area of medicine where IR does not have some impact on patient management. To expand IR as a clinical specialty, interventional radiologists need to assume primary responsibility for the management of the patients they treat. As a clinician, the interventional radiologist needs to take care of the patient, not just the procedure. Providing excellent clinical care before and after an interventional procedure is equally important as achieving technical success in the procedure itself. To achieve this level of IR practice, interventional radiologists require appropriate time, infrastructure, and support. This course aims to explore the key skills and concepts in developing a clinical practice in IR.
Learning objectives
Understand the necessity of developing and maintaining an IR clinic to
- Evaluate patients pre- and post-procedure
- Provide information and obtain informed consent in advance of procedures
- To effectively communicate and build a rapport with patients
- To properly assess outcome measures
To promote effective teamwork within the hospital
- To facilitate obtaining relevant clinical advice for patient management
- To understand the importance of attending relevant multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting
Understand the mechanisms for continually monitoring quality assurance including
- Regular documentation and classification of complications from IR procedures
- Regular morbidity and mortality meetings

This course covers a basic level of IR knowledge and is designed for trainees, students or young consultants aiming to acquire essential knowledge or prepare for the EBIR exam. Thereby, it is tailored to the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology and corresponds to chapters 2.1.5 The interventional radiology team and 2.1.6 Interventional radiology clinical practice.
The format of the course is interactive and easy to use, including texts, graphics, videos and a quiz to support your learning. The course duration is around one and half hours and is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to award 1.5 European CME credits (ECMEC). The CME accreditation for this course will expire on March 31, 2027. A non-CME accredited version of the course will remain available for two more years.
The acquired CME Certificate will be available in the myCIRSE area under CIRSE Academy.
