This course corresponds to chapter 2.2.3.5 Renal transplant interventions in the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology.
Abstract
Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage kidney disease. Although rejection is the most common complication after transplantation, vascular complications can also occur and are serious, as they can cause graft failure. Non-vascular complications, on the other hand, are more frequent and represent a significant source of morbidity. A multi-disciplinary and individualised approach is essential in the management of renal transplant complications. Interventional radiology plays an important role in the diagnosis and image-guided treatment of these complications, lowering morbidity and protecting graft function.
Learning objectives
- Understand vascular and non-vascular anatomy of renal transplants and recognise early and late causes of transplant dysfunction
- Be able to discuss clinical and diagnostic findings of vascular and non-vascular complications after renal transplantation
- Develop the ability to plan optimal management of vascular and non-vascular complications after renal transplantation
- Achieve technical competence in performing angiography and vascular interventions on transplant kidneys
- Achieve technical competence in performing non-vascular interventions after renal transplantation

This course covers a basic level of IR knowledge and is designed for trainees, students or young consultants aiming to acquire essential knowledge or prepare for the EBIR exam. Thereby, it is tailored to the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology and corresponds to chapter 2.2.3.5 Renal transplant interventions.
