CIRSE takes an active role in the development and implementation of research in cardiovascular and interventional radiology. The Society carries out registries to help bolster the evidence base upon which our dynamic specialty relies. This is done either independently or in collaboration with our fellow societies. The CIRSE Registry for SIR-Spheres Therapy (CIRT)

The CIRSE Registry for SIR-Spheres Therapy (CIRT) is a European-wide registry that aims to prospectively collect data on SIR-Spheres therapies. Various European medical centres already use this therapy to treat liver tumours. While smaller studies have shown that this treatment can have a positive effect, the registry aims to investigate the real-life application of SIR-Spheres microspheres on a multinational scale. Recruitment for this registry will commence in the course of 2014.

The CIRSE Registry for LifePearl Microspheres (CIREL)

CIRSE will shortly launch the CIRSE Registry for LifePearl Microspheres (CIREL), a European-wide registry that aims to prospectively collect data on the administration of irinotecan-eluting LifePearl Microspheres, a transcatheter chemo-embolisation (TACE) system for treating patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma with liver-only or liver-dominant metastatic disease. CIREL will be collecting data over an initial period of three years following enrolment of the first patient, by mid-2017.

The CIRSE Caval Filter Retrieval Registry

More and more filters are being inserted for prophylactic or relative indications without evidence of efficacy. The multinational CIRSE IVC Filter Retrieval Registry examined the success of filter retrieval in a multicentre setting. The results were presented by Prof. Michael Lee in the session on "Venous interventions and IVC filters"  (Session ID: FP 1409.4) at CIRSE 2013 in Barcelona. • Endpoints: To assess the success of filter retrieval, assessing complications and dwell-time for different filter types.

• Methods: Data was collected between December 1, 2010 and June 2012. A total of 671 patients were included in the registry. Collected data points included, among others: indication for filter insertion, filter type, access route, dwell-time, retrieval success and complications.

• Results: Filter retrieval success is high (92%) with a low complication rate if optional filters are scheduled for retrieval. The mean filter dwell-time was 14 days.

The CIRSE AngioSeal Vascular Closure Registry

Vascular closure devices are routinely used after many vascular interventional radiology procedures. While single-centre studies on this procedure exist, CIRSE was the first to assess the safety and effectiveness of the routine use of closure devices in interventional radiology in a multi-centre setting.

• Endpoints: To assess the success of deployment, early ambulation and discharge.

• Methods: The CIRSE Registry included procedures with closure devices with an anchor and a plug. It started in January 2009 and ended in August 2009. A total of 1,107 patients were included in the registry.

• Results: The conclusion of this registry of closure devices with an anchor and a plug is that the use of this device in interventional radiology procedures is safe (97.2% deployment success), with a low incidence of serious access site complications (2.5%).
