Fellowship Grant Programme

The CIRSE Fellowship Grant Programme (FGP) allows CIRSE members to apply for a €3,000 grant to fund a one-month stay at a European centre outside their country of residence, where they can train or experience new procedures. With this programme, the CIRSE Foundation actively supports international mobility of IRs and the growth of IR across Europe. Twenty such grants will be available in the 2025 funding cycle and the application period will be open from November 20, 2024, to February 10, 2025.

Due to varying European legislations, the one-month stay at the host centre will most likely be an observership, depending on the arrangement between candidates and hosting institutions.

Apply for a fellowship grant

Applicants must be CIRSE members in good standing in order to apply for a CIRSE Fellowship Grant.

Application process

Applicants must indicate the institution in Europe they wish to attend and make all necessary arrangements directly with the institution. Preference should be given to recommended training centres, but you are free to make arrangements with any European institution. Note that, in the application process, a letter from the hosting institution confirming the preliminary arrangements must be submitted. All arrangements with the hosting institution shall be planned to start in April 2025 at the earliest, as all candidates will be notified by March 31, 2025 whether their application has been successful.

1. Applicants must submit their application via the online application portal and upload the following documents:

  • Motivation letter clearly formulating the educational goals of the planned fellowship
  • Recommendation letter from current head of department
  • Letter from hosting institution confirming preliminary arrangements (click here to download a template)
  • Budget outlining how the grant will be spent. Please note that the grant must be used to cover travel expenses, housing and other indirect costs.
  • Completed and signed application form in PDF format

2. Additionally, applicants will be asked to submit information regarding the following points in the online application form:

  • Previous publications in CVIR and CVIR Endovascular
  • Previous presentations at CIRSE events
  • Previous attendance of CIRSE events
  • EBIR holder or currently registered for the EBIR

3. Once the applicant has successfully submitted the online application, they will receive an email confirming the submission.

4. The application period will be open from November 20, 2024 to February 10, 2025.

5. An independent review board will review and score all applications after February 10, 2025. All applicants will be notified whether their application has been successful by March 31, 2025.

6. After completion of the fellowship, candidates are requested to submit a final report to the CIRSE office within eight weeks.

Please refer to the Terms and Conditions for further details.

Recommended training centres

The following centres have successfully applied to become recommended training centres for the CIRSE Fellowship Grant Programme and fulfil the criteria outlined below.

In order to receive the contact details of the recommended training centre of your choice, please contact [email protected]. Please note that each candidate can request the contact details of up to three training centres for discussing preliminary arrangements. Only one application to one training centre can be submitted per funding cycle.

Practical teaching
Our centre is a tertiary referral university centre which has been formed following the merger of two university hospitals. We have three active hospital sites, with a total of eight IR theatres/rooms running in parallel, which will increase to ten with our new vascular centre with two additional hybrid theatres due to open at the end of 2023. We cover the entire spectrum of vascular and non-vascular IR including below knee/below ankle angioplasty, complex EVAR, TACE, solid organ and lung ablations, prostate embolization, AVM embolization, biliary and urological intervention, dialysis access maintenance, and general IR. We have a total of 16 IR consultants, along with a large vascular surgery team. There are multiple MDTs through the week, including specialized ones dealing with peripheral vascular, HCC, complex aortic pathology, renal transplant+dialysis access, and portal hypertension. Meetings such as M&M and journal club take place regularly, along with audit. Training can be tailored to an individual trainee’s requirements, depending on what their goals and aspirations were. Accordingly they would be able to attend select/specific cases as per their development needs. There would be an opportunity to be involved with emergency/on-call cases. We also have a simulator which would provide the trainee with an additional avenue for training and hands-on work.
